PALIO dell’ASSUNTA

Siena, well known for its gorgeous Italian romanesque gothic architecture and beautiful main square, the Piazza del Campo, is a historic, quaint and unique city located in the beautiful hills of Tuscany. Siena is also home to what is perhaps Italy’s most famous annual sporting event, the Siena Palio dell’Assunta.

Sienas’ Palio is as much about pageantry, civic identity and Sienese pride as it is about the exhilaration of a lawless medieval bareback horse race. Held in honor of the Virgin Mary, the race takes place twice a year, on July 2 and August 16. Ten of the city’s seventeen districts, known as Contrade, are represented by a horse and jockey in each race. This means that a riderless horse can win. There are no rules other than a rider may not interfere with the reigns of another horse. Betrayal, common and guile prized.

I would love for you to join me in experiencing all aspects of this wonderful event. There are numerous preparations, wonderful small celebrations, dinners and ceremonies during the weeks preceding and following the official dates of the Palio that will delight all the senses, spectacular historical costumed parades that take place before the race. Sienas’ historic center is one of the best preserved in the region and is a delight to explore. Sharing these unique festivities and the local cuisine with you will be pure joy capped by the culminating moment of viewing the Palio itself from the luxury of a prestigious VIP balcony.

Come witness this singular cultural event with me, a tradition dating back to the 16th century perfectly set in Siena, so distinguished by its medieval brick buildings. The fan-shaped central square is a must see, Piazza del Campo, is the site of the Palazzo Publico, the Gothic town hall. And there is the Torre del Mangia, a slender 14th-century tower with sweeping views from its distinctive white crown. Think of it, the flags around the shoulders of the people, the flags on the buildings, the blessing of the horses at the churches, the bareback horse race itself as it takes place in the Piazza. The jockeys in their traditional colors and costume and the exuberantly passionate fans cheering them on…

Siena is a superbly exquisite setting in Tuscany offering splendor and comfort in its’ rolling hills and incredible treats for the palate with its’ farm to table to fare. Add the Palio dell’Assunta and you have a captivating experience for the ages – I’ll make sure of it!
