Hong Kong has a very special place in my heart, it was home for seven years and I loved it. Not initially, it was very difficult with the language barrier and the awful weather in the summer months the humidity is dreadful, and forget about your personal space. I must admit, if I had not signed a two year work contract and I honor my contracts, I might have left after six months and I knew a few people that did just that. It took nearly a year to adjust to the pace and lifestyle.
If you think space is premium in New York City, well in Hong Kong is SO much worse. I had a small two bedroom apartment, and I mean everything in my apartment was tiny, I recall one time, I was not well with a terrible cold and my secretary came to my apartment so I could sign urgent documents and she kept saying, only you live here?. I said yes, and she was shocked, she said usually 4 people or more live in a space like this???. Well how could I tell her my house in Australia walk in wardrobe was bigger than this whole apartment!. It was really hard to adjust to not having space coming from Australia when we have so much.
Hong Kong is full of amazing shopping and fantastic restaurants, with world class cuisine, so my first few years my bank balance went down and my weight went up!.
Hong Kong is such a mix of old and new next to each other, glossy skyscrapers but there are many areas to see the old Hong Kong like Old Town Central. One of the oldest yet also most dynamic district in the city. A place where century old temples share the same streets as fashion forward concept stores, or where authentic tea houses coexist with modern art galleries.
