I have come to visit this beautiful town twice, it’s worth a visit. Visiting twenty years apart and could see it’s more touristy now, but it’s kept it’s charms just expanded to add for more tourists. One of Italy’s most historic holiday resorts, Taormina is a picturesque small town perched on a slope high above the Ionian Sea on the eastern coast of Sicily. A popular and fashionable destination for well over a century, the town still values its traditions and you’ll enjoy Sicilian food and a fair amount of Italian atmosphere, pottering through the pretty town, leisurely aperitivi and long, enjoyable meals. Picturesque alleys and staircases above and below the Corso are interesting to explore, while if you want to stretch your legs further there are attractive walks up into the hills, or down to the sea.
Taormina is largely about its atmosphere, views and charm. Although in size it would generally be considered a small town, the historic center feels like a well-to-do hill village turned into a resort with a glossy sheen of glamour. stopping at a cafe, buying an ice-cream and admiring views. The handsome principal thoroughfare, Corso Umberto, is mostly pedestrianized and ideal for strolling and window-shopping. Halfway along is the panoramic Piazza IX, a focal point for visitors, where you can sit on benches and admire the town’s wonderful views over the sea and towards Etna. you’ll be following in the footsteps of famous visitors including Tennessee Williams and Elizabeth Taylor.
